In my Foundation 1 class, we were assigned to create character faces based on a chosen animal while using complex geometric shapes. The focus was on conveying different expressions and applying basic design principles that we've learned.
I generated three concepts, using rounded, curved shapes to create a soft and friendly feeling. The first two concepts represent a happy and energetic expressions, while the third represent a sadder emotion.
I started making multiple sketches on different expressions for a French bulldog, and how they would react. Frenchies are known for their clingy and affectionate nature, often appearing cheerful and energetic. At the same time, their distinctive features — like their bat-like ears, small nostrils, and large, square face — can often make them look sad when they are relaxed or tired. These expressions made happy and sad the most fitting choices for the character design.
