For this Graphic Design 1 project, we were a given a list of books to chose from to re-designed. I chose the book called “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett, which follows the character named Skeeter who returns from college to become a writer. She decides to interview Aibileen, a black housekeeper, and her experience working within white families. Eventually more women began to come forward, revealing the truth of the harsh treatment they encountered.
Concept 1:  This visual of the pie concept is to show the love and care that many housekeepers put into their cooking. The pie being cut into slices symbolizes how the housekeepers efforts are divided and taken without the lack of recognition and respect, despite doing so much for the white families. The pie is used as a vocal point, highlighting both the warmth and injustice at the heart of the story.
Concept 2 : This visual of the clothesline concept is to resemble the way clothes sway in the wind. One job a housekeeper performs is cleaning and washing clothes, that are eventually pinned up to dry. It symbolizes different stories being aired out, and inadvertently revealing secrets to the public, tying into one of the main themes of giving a voice to those who were once unheard.
My process began with researching and analyzing the book, while focusing on the author's message on humanity. I identifies key elements that could connect back to the story. I began creating compositions using simple shapes to brainstorm potential concepts. Then after developing those ideas further by collaging objects, bringing the concepts to life through visual storytelling and beauty.
